Gala Evening Details Announced
Cuchulainn Hurling Club, Armagh, have just released
details of its next major fund raising initiative to assist the vision of
obtaining its very own playing facilities. A Gala Evening will take place on
Saturday 31st March 2007 in Armagh City Hotel at which a very special
anniversary will be celebrated. It will be the 25th anniversary reunion of the
1982 victorious Christian Brothers School Senior Team, winners of the McGeehan
Cup, Ulster Colleges’ premier hurling competition. Eleven players from the team
also played for Cúchulainn Hurling Club at that time. This team is unique in

U12 County Final Match Report
Cuchulainn Hurling Club under 12½ Squad recently
retained their championship title after a hard fought and disciplined display
against Derrynoose. The match started with an early pointed free from B
Coulter. For the next 15 minutes play spread from one end to the other but
neither side were able to capitalise on their opportunities until L Mc Gillen
added a point from play for Cúchulainns . Derrynoose answered quickly with a
pointed free but a resolute Cúchulainn defence lead by captain D Doyle held
firm. Half time Cuchulainn 0:2 Derrynoose 0:1.
The second half opened brightly with both teams trading points quickly. With a
point still the difference going into the last 5 minutes a well worked move by
the Cuchulainn forward line resulted in S Moen crashing the ball to the
Derrynoose net, another B Coulter free shortly after left the final result
Cúchulainn 1:4 Derrynoose 0:3. The squad’s management would like to
congratulate the team on a hard fought display in which they had to dig deep to
maintain focus and determination during a very fragmented second half.
Big thanks also to all the people who assisted during the year, the club,
management and especially the boys appreciate your efforts.

U-16s lose Championship Final to Middletown
The U-16 team played in front of a big crowd at
Ballymacnab and were hoping to emulate the achievements of the U-12 and U-14
teams. Right from the start it was obvious that this was going to be a close
encounter but it was Cuchulainns that went into the break 2 points up. However,
in the second half Middletown rallied and once they went in front they didn't
look back.
Naturally the biys were disappointed to lose out but they should take heart for
such a gutsy and brave performance. On behalf of the coach and mentors we would
like to thank all the boys for their dedication and hard work this season and
look forward to having another crack at the Championship next season.
Friday 29th September
U-16s to play Middletown in County Championship Final
Having overcome the might of Keady in the quarter final
of the championship, Cuchulainns U16’s took on Derrynoose last Sunday.
Cuchulainns got off to a great start with a goal after 3 minutes from D
Grimley, quickly followed by a point from T Duffy. After this great start
however, it took Cuchulainns another 20 minutes to register their next score
which was a goal from N Moen. This was followed 2 minutes later with a point
from T Duffy. Cuchulainns entered half time a point behind Derrynoose.
Cuchulainns started the second half a much more determined team, and scoring
was opened with a well taken point from D Grimley within the first minute. The
game came to life ten minutes into the second half when there were four goals
scored in eight minutes; two of which were scored by team captain C Coulter.
This run of scoring effectively sealed victory for the Cuchulainns. There were
another four points scored in the last ten minutes, including one great point
from young P Rafferty.
Cuchulainns now eagerly await the county final against Middletown this Sunday.
Final Score CHC 6-09, Derrynoose 2-08.
U-12s Win County Championship
In what can only be described as the worst weather
conditions possible and on a pitch not suited to hurling, the young Cuchulainns
retained the County Championship for the 2nd year in a row.
Final score CHC 1-05 Derrynoose 0-03.

Sunday 10th September
U-14s Win Championship Final
The Cuchulainns U-14 Hurling team defeated Middletown
in the County Championship Final last Saturday in Ballymacnab. Despite the
miserable weather conditions both teams put on an excellent display of hurling
for the brave crowd who came to watch. Both teams started nervously and it was
5 minutes before the first score came about. This came from a well taken free
by P Heaney of Cuchulainns and was soon followed by another free from PJ
Nugent. The lead soon extended with 2 quick goals from B Quinn, both coming
from goal mouth scrambles. The City side continued to dominate the first half
and scored a further goal through L McGillan. The Middletown defence were kept
under constant pressure and Cuchulainns went into the break 3-06 to no score.
The second half proved a much tougher task as Middletown now had the advantage
of the wind. This allowed them to chip away at Cuchulainns lead and they scored
1-03 without reply in within the first 15 minutes. However, Cuchulainns dug
deep through some resolute defending by the full back line of P Rafferty, T
Marley and R Gribbon, which seemed to give the lift the team needed. With 10
minutes to go S Kerr broke through the Middletown defence on a brilliant solo
run and rifled a powerful shot into the back of the net. From that point
Cuchulainns didn’t look back and they were able to build on this further with
another free from P Heaney and a final goal in the dying minutes from C Toner.
Final score 5-08 to 1-03.
The U-14 2006 County Championship Winners

Captain P Rafferty receives the Seamus Duffy Trophy from Francie
Casey (Junior County Hurling Board Officer)
This was an excellent team performance by the Cuchulainns who haven’t won the
U-14 title for 6 years. Praise has to go to every member of the panel with C
Quinn having played a great game at half-back and N Duffy in midfield.
Panel:- C McGillan, T Marley, P Rafferty (Capt), R Gribbon, C Duffy, P Heaney,
C Quinn, PJ Nugent, N Duffy, D Moen, C Toner, S Kerr, J Dynes, B Quinn, L
McGillan, P Leonard, C Leonard, P Fox, P Duffy, P Rice (Unavailable: J Martin,

U-14s to play Middletown in Championship Final
The U-14 team will be hoping for a repeat performance
in the Championship this Saturday (2nd Sept) as they face Middletown in the
U-14 County Championship.
Having already played and only just defeated Middletown in the league the team
know that the championship will not be an easy prize to claim. However, the
lads have been trianing hard and are confident they can produce the form it
will take to win.
The match will be played at Ballymacnab at 12pm - all parents and club
players/members are encourage to come along and give their support.

U-12s Beat Keady in Championship
Cuchulainns inflicted another defeat on Keady within
the space of a week when the U-12s faced them in the quarter finals of the U-12
County Championship.
The young guns dominated the match from start to finish and went through to the
semi's with a scoreline of 7-04 to 1-01. This was an excellant team effort with
N Gannon and D Doyle producing man of match performances.
The team go on to face Camlough in the semi's on Monday 4th September.
Tuesday 22nd August
U-14s Beat Keady in Championship Thriller
The U-14 team recorded what is ultimately their
greatest victory this season when they knocked out Keady in the County
Championship Quarter Finals at Middletown last night. In what was an extremely
fast-tempo and enthralling match it was CHC that took the lead with a well
worked goal orchestrated by D Moen and finished off by J Dynes. Further scores
by P Heaney, S Kerr and P Fox stretched out the lead but Keady came back
strongly with their own scores and a goal to ensure the sides were level by
half-time.
The second half started with the same intensity as the first with both teams
exchanging points and the lead changing hands every few minutes. CHC then went
ahead with a C Toner goal only for Keady to pull one straight back from the
resulting poc out. Then, with 15 minutes to go, CHC finally got the decisive
breakthrough they needed. With P Heaney firing high balls into Keady's goal
area it was only a matter of time before a chance was converted. Some good
ground work by L McGillan put C Toner through and he calmy soloed on before
scoring his second goal. This was followed up by scores by B Quinn, L McGillan,
PJ Nugent and P Heaney before C Toner got his hatrick after another goal mouth
scramble. Keady simply had no reply as the full back line of P Rafferty, T
Marley, R Gribbon and goalkeeper C McGillan held firm.
Final score Keady 2-10, CHC 5-11. This was undoubtably the team's finest effort
of the season and was watched by a large and very supportive crowd who
witnessed a brilliant display of hurling by both teams. Praise has to go out to
every single member on the panel for a truly tremendous performance and with
the probability that Portadown can't field a team, this means the CHC go
straight into the County Championship. It is hoped that the lads can produce
the same performance against Middletown in the final and that we can get the
same support from parents and other club members and players as this really
gave the lads a lift.
Cuchulainns Host Successful Annual Stephen O'Keefe Tournament
Last weekend the City hurling Club hosted the annual
triangular Stephen O’Keeffe Festival of Hurling. The Club welcomed back
players, mentors and families from Clarecastle (Co Clare) and Roanmore (Co
Waterford) for a weekend packed with sport and craic, with each team competing
for the Stephen O’Keeffe Perpetual Cup. The late Stephen O’Keefe was a mentor
from Roanmore and this competition is dedicated to his memory. Two additional
competitions have been added this year; the Stephen O’Keeffe 7-a-side
tournament for the players who did not make the 1st fifteen; and the John
Hanley Skills Award (named after the Clarecastle stalwart).
The hurling tournament began in earnest on Saturday morning and the home and
visiting fans were treated to some excellent displays of skill that Henry
Shefflin or DJ Carey would have been proud. After the skills competition
everyone was treated for lunch in the Pearse OG GAC and then the players went
shopping before a visit to the cinema. After 10.00am Mass, the tournament
concluded with an enthralling encounter between the home side and Clarecastle,
who had dominated Roanmore the previous day. This match had all the emotions of
a championship final, goal-mouth scrambles, well-taken scores, high fielding,
excellent blocking and hooking. Going into the last 10 minutes Cuchulainns were
holding their own with the scores tied at 2.3 each. However, two late goals
sealed the Stephen O’Keeffe trophy for Clarecastle. Roanmore ran out winners of
the 7-a-side competition but the host players and mentors can be very proud of
their own performance over the weekend. Indeed the overall “Player of the
Tournament” David Doyle is from the host Club. David was up against stiff
competition from the Clarecastle full-back Michael Casey (who won the skills
tournament) and the goal-keepers from Roanmore and CHCs were both outstanding.
Each Club also nominated a “Best Player” and Michael Carson (goal-keeper) was
our deserved winner.
The Club wishes to acknowledge the support it received from; Pearse Og GAC, the
players’ parents, referees Paddy Lavery and Gerard Devlin, sponsors Linwoods
Bakery, Moorefield Joinery, On Site Catering and O’Connor & Co Accountants
in staging this event.
Weekend Scores:-
7-a-side:
Roanmore 4-2 Cuchulainns 1-3
Clarecastle 4-3 Cuchulainns 0-3
Roanmore 5-2 Clarecastle 0-1
15-a-side:
Clarecastle 4-14 Roanmore 0-2
Roanmore 2-9 Cuchulainns 2-3
Clarecastle 4-3 Cuchulainns 2-3

U-14s Win Against Middletown in League
The U-14 notched up another good victory with a gutsy
display in Middletown. With certain key players missing, which included their
goalkeeper and 2 influential backs, they soon took control of the match.
Several excellent taken frees by P Heaney and a hard fought goal by P Leonard
meant the team had a commanding 7 point lead going into the second half.
However, Middletown are not a team that goes down easily and they soon came
back, using the wind to their advantage. Another goal for, this time scored by
S. Kerr kept CHC in front but with 5 minutes to go Middletown scored themselves
to get back to within a single point. The U-14s kept their nerve and gave
everything they had to win the match. A final point scored by P Heaney from a
free ensured that all 3 points went back to the city club.
Final score Middletown 1-09, CHC 2-08. This will hopefully give the lads some
confidence as they prepare to play Keady next week in the Championship.

The U-14 team played a weakened Portadown side on Monday night at
Sherrysfields. The points had already been conceded but a game was arranged
involving both older and younger players from Portadown. Having not played for
some time the Cuchulainns needed a bit of time to get into their stride but
starting scoring freely and had the match effectively won by halftime. Good
scores from PJ Nugent and P. Fox in the first half combined with scores
from N. Duffy in second helped secure a 5-12 to 1-00 victory. Other players
that stood out were new comer B. Quinn, D. Moen in the half forward line and P.
Rafferty, T. Marley and R. Gribbon at the back.

The under 12 hurlers got back to winning ways against Sean Treacys of Lurgan.
The travelling team were hampered due to missing players and their players
should be proud of how they played, never dropping their heads.
Lurgan started brightly and were unlucky not to register the first score
however with five minutes gone Cuchulainns scored a goal. This goal was quickly
followed by a second and the Cuchulainns grew in confidence and took control of
the rest of the half. Half time Cuchulainns 4:7 Lurgan 0:0
Cuchulainns controlled the second half adding on another 4:2.
Final score Cuchulainns 8:9 Lurgan 0:0

U-12 Team Lose to Middletown by a Single Point
The under 12 hurling team travelled to Middletown and were unlucky to come away
with a single point defeat.
The Cuchulainns started brightly and quickly developed a two goal lead. However
a combine of unlucky wides and poor finishing stopped them from increasing the
lead. As the half went on Middletown came into the game and a high dropping
ball from a free made it into the Cuchulainn net just before half time.
Middletown opened the second half with a point but the Cuchulainns quickly
responsed with a well worked attack which yielded a goal. Middletown took
control of the game from this point and quickly reduced the deficit with a goal
however with only two minutes remaining Middletowns midfielder scored a fine
individual goal to put them in front for the first time. Final score
Cuchulainns 3:0 - Middletown 3:1.

Great Start to U-12 League Campaign
The under 12 team completed a successful trip to Derrynoose in the
first league match of the season winning well on a score line of 2-08 to 1-01.
The match started with a series of strong Derrynoose attacks which resulted in
a goal by the second minute after a mix up in the Cuchulainns defence. The
Cuchulainns then took control of the middle of the pitch and using great team
work and individual flare tapped over six unanswered points. Half-time
Cuchulainns 0-06, Derrynoose 1-00.
Derrynoose started the second half brightly with a point but
Cuchulainns added on another 2-02 to win comfortably .

U-16 Team win First League Match Comfortably
Sunday evening saw the start of the U16
league, and with a 19 strong panel we ventured to Camlough. With it being the
first game of the year there was a sense of apprehension among the team. This
however was to be short lived, with a goal from P.J Nugent within the first
minute of the game. This was followed with a goal from Eoin Byrne after four
minutes. Before the end of the first half, five of the forwards had scored a
goal each, as well as some excellent points from Niall Moen and Tony Duffy.
This, along with some stout defending from Connor Coulter, Ryan Moen and Liam
McKenna saw Cuchulainn’s end the first half 27 points ahead with the game
effectively over.
The second half started as the first half ended, with scores from Paddy (bug)
Heaney and Caolan Doyle. The team played out the rest of the game exhibiting
excellent skill and great discipline. With a lot more hard work and 100%
commitment we hope to have successful league and championship campaigns.
Final Score - CHC 14-12 Craobh Rua 1-03.

Great Start to Armagh League for Seniors
The senior team got off to an excellent
start to the Armagh League campaign with a 5 point win over Middletown at
Pearse Og Park on Tuesday last. However, if Middletown had taken all their
opportunities the outcome could have totally different as they had 9 wides in
the first half alone. The City team were put under severe pressure for most of
the first period and managed just two points, both from County star Declan
Coulter (1 free) to trail 0.2 to 1.3 at the break. The second half saw a
rejuvenated Cúchulainns side as they started to match Middletown for commitment
and tenacity and brought themselves back into the game by releasing the ball
early out of defence. Along with a steady full back line led by Rory Devlin,
the half backs and mid-field partnership pf Ronan McWilliams and Christy Kane
were able to supply balls to Cormac Toner and Declan Coulter who took some
wonderful long range points between them. Even though the other four forwards
did not get on the score sheet, they worked hard to create space for the speedy
wing forwards. 1.7 was scored without reply (1.2 Toner & 0.5 Coulter) until
late in the game when Middletown scrambled the ball over the goal line for
their only score of the second half, but two late points (1 free) by Coulter
sealed the result with a final score line of 1.11 to 2.3. It is worth
noting that both sides were missing key players due to injuries but defeating
one of the league favourites was a satisfying start to the season.

Cúchulainns Under 14 Feile Squad Win
Ulster
Feile Title in Cushendall

U-14 Cúchulainns Winning Ulster Feile Team 2006
1st game v Larne (at Feystown)
Cúchulainns played into the wind in the first half and began
in dominating fashion with early goals coming from N.Duffy and P.Fox. This was
followed by a long range point in the 12th minute from mid-fielder P. Heaney.
Larne responded on the half time whistle with a point. In the second half CHC
were sluggish, despite having the wind and Larne got the first score with a
point in the 18th minute. P. Nugent responded with a pointed free in the 21st
minute but Larne showed good fighting spirit by scoring again in the 23rd
minute. CHC came to life in the last 5 minutes with points from P.Fox and P.
Heaney. CHC won the game on a score line of 2.4 to Larne's 0.3.
P. Rafferty and C. Toner had great games at full back and
mid-field respectively.
2nd game v
Shane O'Neills (at Glenarm)
CHC travelled to Glenarm for their second group match against
Shane O'Neills. CHC started brightly with 3 early points from P. Nugent and P.
Heaney (2 pts). Shane O’Neills responded with a goal in the 10th minute
but CHC replied with a goal of their own in the 11th min from P.
Rice. Glenarm responded with a point to leave the halftime score 1.3 to 1.1.
CHC took control of the second half, with goals from P. Leonard, and N.Duffy.
C. McGillan was outstanding for CHC in goals as he stopped many dangerous
Glenarm attacks. The final score was 3.3 to 1.1.
N. Duffy, P. Heaney, M. McGirr and B.
O’Hare showed outstanding ability and skills during this game.
Final v Sarsfields, Belfast (at Cushendun)
Sarsfields started with a strong wind advantage but it was
CHC who drew first blood in the seventh minute with a pointed free from P.
Nugent. Sarsfields responded with a point in the 13th min. In a very
stop start first half the CHC boys held their composure and restricted
Sarsfields to this only score. In the second half CHC had wind advantage and
used this to apply severe pressure to the Sarsfields defence. P. Nugent pointed
a free in the 16th min quickly followed by a point from play by P.
Heaney and a goal in the 19th min by C. Toner. This was followed by
another free taken by P. Nugent won by the hard working N. Duffy in full
forward.
Sarsfields broke out of defence through
their centre half back who sent a long ball into CHC goal mouth which was sent
to the back of the net by the full forward. At that point the score was 1.4 CHC
1.1 Sarsfeilds. CHC regained their composure with P. Nugent scoring a point
from play and this was followed up by a goal from N.Duffy. In injury time the
dangerous hard working N.Duffy secured a penalty which P. Nugent put over the
bar to leave the final score 2.6 to 1.1.
Captain P. Rafferty who held the back
line well and of N. Duffy, P. Heaney and PJ Nugent who converted the majority
of points and goals between them. The team will go into the Armagh Feile next
weekend full of confidence after a great performance in Antrim and will look to
push for their place in the All-Ireland Feile in Cork this June.
This was a brilliant team effort from
every member of the squad but particular mention has to be made of C. McGillan,
P. Rafferty, M. McGirr, B. O’Hare, P. Fox, N. Duffy and P. Nugent. The
outstanding player on the CHC team was Patrick Heaney who showed leadership,
drive and scoring ability from midfield. The team will go into the Armagh Feile
next weekend full of confidence after a great performance in Antrim and will
look to push for their place in the All-Ireland Feile in Cork this June.

Families and Club members gathered at the Clubrooms to await the
team’s triumphant return and Micky Moen, one of the mentors who is presently
recovering from illness, came from his sick bed to issue the players with their
medals. The Club wishes him a speedy recovery. The team Captain, P Raffferty,
made a most eloquent speech in front of the jubilant audience, which brought to
a close what was a great day for Cuchulainn Hurling Club and will be a
wonderful memory for the boys in future years to come.

Hurling Tournament a great Success
Cuchulainn Hurling Club recently held its annual Fergus Moen
Perpetual Tournament at the excellent Pearse Og facility in Ballycrummy. As the
senior team was due to play Armoy in the Ulster Senior Hurling league later in
the afternoon, the two teams were made up of mainly juvenile, minor and retired
players. The two teams traded scores in a free flowing game with several
players including Declan McKenna, Ryan Moen and Tony Duffy displaying excellent
skill levels. Former full-back star, Gregs McKernan, was also in top form in
his new position of full-forward and although was on the losing team managed a
tally of three goals. Two parents and mentors, relatively new to the sport also
took part and even contributed to 2 of the goals!
The team managed by Jimmy Kelly and captained by Ronan Hart eventually put the
game beyond their opponents to collect their plaques from Mary, wife of the
late Fergie. Player of the tournament, decided by officials on the sideline,
was awarded to young Declan McKenna, for his sense of awareness and ability to
distribute the ball quickly and accurately to his team mates.

Fergus Moen Perpetual Tournament Winners 2006
The senior team then took to the field to play the first ever hurling match on
the new pitch at Ballycrummy against Armoy in the Ulster Senior Hurling League.
Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, the city side took advantage
of the very few chances by scoring two goals from Ronan McWilliams and Barry
Keeley but trailed at half time by 1.10 to 2.0. With the wind advantage in the
second half Cúchulainns still found it difficult to break down the north Antrim
outfit but some dogged hurling by the veteran Martin Scanlon and the
introduction of the Captain, Paul McKernan, they pulled back the deficit to
earn a draw, with a final score line of 3.6 to 1.12. This league point
along with the three earned the previous week against Lisnaskea Emmets still
gives the team a reasonable chance of promotion, but must win the next few
games against Coleraine, Clontibret and Strabane to make the playoffs. The Club
wishes to express its gratitude to Pearse Og GAC for use of its fantastic new
surface and we look forward to playing there on a regular basis.
At the Club’s Annual Presentation later that evening a great night was had by
all and the following awards were presented:
Donal Powell Trophy for Senior Player:
Rory Devlin
Tommy Corvan Cup for Best Young Player:
Declan Coulter
Micky McManus Cup for Minor Player of the Year:
Gerard Barton
Most Improved Minor: Niall Moen
Fergus Moen Trophy: Declan McKenna
(best player of the tournament)
And awards were presented to Cormac Toner and Sean
Clarke for being selected as Ulster Colleges’ All-stars.

hope that this situation will be resolved within the next few years.
