Annual Underage Presentation Ceremony
Cuchulainn Hurling Club held its annual Underage presentation ceremony recently at Armagh Harps GAC.
Club Chairman, Jimmy Kelly, welcomed the players and parents of the Under12, 14 & 16 squads and encouraged the boys who were moving up an age group to continue giving 100% to their new coaches. Then Damien Kirk, Secretary of the Juvenile Committee, co-ordinated the prize-giving ceremony.
The first presentation of the evening, the Enda Kirk Award for Best Newcomer at Under 12 level, was introduced by Club President Brendan Kirk, brother of the late Enda. Brendan complimented the coaching staff of the club on their efforts over the past season and urged parents to continue their support for the Club. Brendan then presented the trophy to John A Heaney father of Eoghan Heaney.
Damien then introduced senior player Declan Coulter to present the rest of the awards. The Club is fortunate to have such a role model for the underage players as Declan has represented his County, Province and his Country this year, which has boosted the profile of the Club.
The Under 12 squad had a successful year; the lads won Division II of the County league and won Section A of the Ballinascreen Under 12 Blitz. The lads also made an excellent account of themselves at the annual Stephen O’Keeffe Tournament in Clarecastle earlier in the year.
Most improved player went to Sean McCann and Player of the Year was awarded to Finnan Maguire.
The Under 14 Squad made up for their Feile Final defeat to Keady Lamh Dearg by beating the same team in the County Championship Final, coming from an incredible 8 points down with only 5 minutes left on the clock. Most Improved player of the year went to the, Philip Duffy with Ciaran Duffy picking up the Player of the Year award.
The Under 16 awards went to PJ Nugent for Most Improved with Paddy Beag Heaney taking then Player of the Year award.
The Club wishes to acknowledge the support of the parents, sponsors and Armagh Harps GAC for the use of their facilities.

Historic Hurling Match under Lights
Thursday night past witnessed the first club match under the new flood lights at the Athletic Grounds between Cúchulainns and Middletown. The fixture doubled up as a home league match for the city side and also the winners would represent the county in the Ulster Intermediate Hurling Championship. It was a crisp evening which was matched by some hard hitting in a low scoring first half. Neither team was able to gain the upper hand and the teams went in at half time evens on CHC 0.5, Middletown 1.2. Both back lines were dominant with G Barton, E Gribben, P McManus showing by example although Middletown’s keeper was in top form saving three goal bound attempts from the dangerous D Coulter.
The trend was much the same in second half and there was never more than a two points between the teams. D Coulter used the meagre supply he could obtain to keep the city side into the game and with the introduction of P Donnelly into the full forward line he made an instant impact with a point. Going into the dying minutes a point down D Coulter gave a cross field pass to T Turley who took on his marker but his shot was saved by the keeper again but the he managed to get the rebound over the line. A further point from a D Coulter finished this physical encounter which appeared to take a great deal out of both teams.
Final score line: CHC 1.12, Middleown 1.9
CHC scorers; D Coulter 0.8 (4 frees), T Turley 1.1, P Donnelly 0.1, C Coulter 0.1 (1 free), P McKernan 0.1

Cúchulainns claw back an eight point deficit to win County U14 Hurling Championship Final
Last Saturday, on a rare sunny afternoon in Killeavey, the young hurlers from the Cathedral City won the U14 county championship with a final 10 minute fight back which saw them overturn an 8 point deficit into a 2 point win. Still bitterly disappointed from their Feile Final defeat to Keady back in May, the lads had been training hard all through the summer with the sole focus of winning the championship. This was the 4th match between these sides this season and each time there had only ever been a couple of points to separate them so no-one who travelled down to South Armagh that day could have predicted the outcome and indeed the way in which the match was won.

The first half saw lots of chances but very few scores. It was Cúchulainns that started the brighter however, taking an early goal after a magnificent run by L McGillan. Further goal mouth scrambles could not be capitalised on and this allowed Keady to get back into the match with a couple of well taken points. C Duffy then produced two of the best long range scores this season, one from a 65 and the other from open play which was just as far out to stretch out the lead. The match then swung back in Keady’s favour and 3 further points saw them take the lead. A late injury time free by L McGillan saw the teams go into half time all level. CHC 1-03, Keady 0-06.

With the momentum clearly in their favour Keady came out in the second half and continued to pile pressure on the courageous Cúchulainn full back line of R Quigley, L Oliver and P Toal with high testing balls. This persistence eventually paid off and after failing to clear their lines Keady scored a goal. This was soon followed up by another point. Before CHC could recover Keady then scored another goal after a wild swing by keeper C Quinn failed to connect with the ball which rolled despairingly into the back of his net. A further point by Keady came soon after, and with 10 minutes to go the lads were 8 points down and the match looked seemingly out of their grasp. A final tactical switch by the CHC management saw M Carson swap places with C Gorman in the half back and half forward lines. This proved to be crucial as within a minute M Carson broke through the Keady defence and scored a blistering goal. The fight back was on. CHC sensed the match turning and all 15 began playing with a ferocity that could only be admired by all who were present. P Duffy pulled another point back from play and L McGillan dispatched 2 further frees. Meanwhile the half back trio of C Duffy, C Gorman and captain J Lynch stifled much of Keady’s play makers and the midfield of B Murphy and J McIlroy, who hadn’t stopped running all day finally began to see some reward for their hard work. CHC finally reclaimed the lead with another goal from M Carson after a poor clear out provided him with a clear shot into the corner of the goal. Another free for L McGillan and Keady were behind by 2 with a couple of minutes to go. The drama did not stop there with both teams trading points before Keady laid siege to the Cúchulainn goal creating 2 goal chances. The first one was blocked by a heroic effort from P Toal whilst the second, after some excellent defending by C Quinn zipped past the post and harmlessly wide. That was the last chance, the referee blew his whistle and the city lads had done it. Final score CHC 3-08, Keady 2-09.

Yet again both Keady and Cúchulainns put on a real demonstration of quality hurling for everyone who attended. This can only be good for the future of hurling in this county and as these lads develop into even better hurlers we look forward to many more enthralling contests in the years to come. Cúchulainns Hurling Club would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Killeavey for hosting the final and the referee/linesmen/umpires who officiated, to the coaches involved who have given up a lot of their time over the last 10 months and to the parents who have been extremely supportive of the club and have allowed their children the chance to play this magnificent game.

Finally, we would like to congratulate every member of the panel, each of whom have contributed to the fantastic achievements this team has had over the season – we look forward to hopefully working with you all next season in order to bring further success to this club.

Cúchulainns 2008 U14 Panel:- C Quinn, M McCullagh, L Oliver, S Moen, A Corrigan, B Murphy, C Judge, J McIlroy, B Coulter, T Clarke, J Freeman, C Duffy, P Duffy, L McGillan, N Quinn, F Nugent, C Gorman, T McArdle, M Cartmill, P Toal, R Quigley, M Carson, R Leonard, C McKenna, J McAtarsney, N Gannon, J Lynch (Captain)

CHC Golf Society Weekend Report
Cuchulainn Hurling Club’s Golf Society chose the best weekend of the last three months to head off to County Offally via Co Meath last weekend for their annual golfing weekend. The lads played Headford GC on Friday on the way down and the competition was won by Tony Duffy with an excellent 33points. After a quite Friday evening sampling the pubs of Tullamore, the lads teed off at the excellent Tullamore GC and Team B won the day in a “Ryder Cup” type format lead by the Chairman himself, James Kelly.

Tuesday 9th September

U14s Through to County Championship Final
Cúchulainns U14s comfortably made it through to the final where they will face old foes Keady for the county championship title. Played down in Newtownhamilton on a decent pitch the only thing that spoiled the evening was the poor light. Cúchulainns started strongly and despite some early wides began putting up scores through B Coulter, B Murphy and P Duffy. C Gorman and R Quigley worked tirelessly in the half forward line and supplied good quality ball into the full forwards. This was rewarded through further scores from N Quinn, C Duffy (with a brilliant score from the half way line) and A Corrigan before the latter scored a goal from a ground strike. This made up for an unlucky shot earlier which rattled the cross bar. Half-time CHC 1-11 Killeavy 0-01.
Killeavy then began to put up a valiant fight in the second half with some fierce tackling and excellent displays from their no. 9 and their goalkeeper. However, the Armagh lads remained firm and continued to put scores over the bar before another ground strike goal from C Judge cemented their place in the final. Killeavy did manage to get a goal themselves after a mixup in the back line allowed one of their forwards to beat C Quinn in goal. Full-time CHC 2-21 Killeavy 1-04.
So all eyes are now firmly on the final (20th Sept, venue TBC) which will undoubtably be an exciting and close encounter between 2 very good hurling teams. All parents and supporters of the club are encouraged to attend the final to cheer the lads on.

Card Night at the Clubrooms
Card Night resumes on Friday 26th September in Clubrooms at 9.30pm sharp. New players always welcome.

Cúchulainns Narrowly Beaten in Controversial Premature Injury Time Championship Hurling Semi-Final
Cúchulainns were beaten by the slightest of margins in an enthralling tough yet sporting Championship Semi final tie against arch rivals Keady in Killeavey on Sunday 31st August. The city outfit stormed into a 1st half lead with an exhibition of free taking by the Coulter brothers Chris (2) ands Declan (5) with another 2 from play from Declan. Moreover, their young corner forwards seemed to get the better of their markers any time they received supply with Tommy Marley (1) and Conor Coulter (2). The CHC backline hurled with confidence and kept the Keady attack to only two scores from play with G Barton stifling the forward threat from Keady’s Paul McArdle. The full backline of P McManus, E Gribben and S Fields needed to and hurled out of their skins in the opening 30 minutes which finished; CHC 0.12 Ceide 0.7
When play resumed it was the experienced Keady side which took the initiative with several scores from frees and eventually edged ahead for the 1st time in the game with a well taken goal by their full forward. However, the city side overcame this period of dominance with an excellent point from Paul McKernan and a superb goal by the skilful Declan Coulter. However the Keady side replied with a goal from a 21 yard free to lead by a single point. But the Cuchulainn side did not drop their heads and with good offensive pressure assisted by some dissent from the Keady backline; this allowed D Coulter to crash a 21 yard free to the roof of the net to regain a 2 point lead. Unfortunately, a few silly frees allowed the Keady side back into the game and to lead by the slightest of margins with what appeared to be only 2 of the 3 extra minutes being played as Sam McClatchy blew the final whistle.
This was a heart-breaking performance by a very skilful, young and confident Cúchulainns side that just went asleep for 10 minutes at the start of the second half. On contemplation, this display will be built upon by Chris Heaney and his selectors and you can be sure that Cúchulainns are back and back for along time to come with the structures that are now in place in the Club. One question remains to be asked about the pitch on Sunday; who had the responsibility of getting this pitch ready for a hurling match? When the ball went dead it could not be seen under ankle deep grass leading to several dangerous melees. With a grand plan for hurling within the county announced recently, surely having the grass cut to an appropriate length is not out of the question!!
Full time; CHC 2.14, Ceide 2.15
CHC Team: P Quigley, S Fields, E Gribben, P McManus, C Clifford, G Barton, C Toner, M Gillespie, C Kane, Chris Coulter, R McWilliams, P McKernan, T Turly, D Coulter, Conor Coulter. Subs; J Quigley for M Gillespie in 2nd half.

2008 Stephen O'Keeffe Report
Cuchulainn U12 Hurling Team travelled recently to Clarecastle County Clare to participate in the Annual Stephen O’Keeffe Festival of Hurling. A party of 24 children and 5 mentors combined with a number of parents made the journey to participate in the weekend’s festival of hurling.
The weekend began on Friday morning when we headed from our clubrooms at 10 am. Our first stop was for lunch in Ballinasloe then onward to Loughrea where our lads were treated to an excellent coaching session from Galway intercounty U21 Hurler Brian Mahoney at Loughrea GAA Hurling pitch. Brian finished of the session by wishing the children and mentors every success with their fourth coming weekend of hurling. From Loughrea we continued with our journey and finally reached Clarecastle GAA grounds at 5.30p.m. On arrival the children received light refreshments from the host club. Following this the host club had organised a skills competition in which Cúchulainns Finnen Maguire and Shane Cartmill took part against Clarecastle and Roanmore. Both players showed tremendous ability in specific skills such as ground striking left and right and striking out of hand whilst running. On completing the skills competition the Cuchulainn children and mentors where then introduced to their host families for the weekend. With all children safely allocated to their host families the travelling parents and mentors had a social evening meeting with their counterparts from both Clarecastle and Roanmore.

Saturday 23rd August the hurling tournament began with Cúchulainns and Roanmore competing in the first game at 10.00am. This game was followed by a 7 aside game also between the same two clubs. Both games where eagerly contested with Roanmore just finishing narrowly in front at the end. The third game was against Clarecastle which also was a keenly contested game which finished with Clarecastle winning by a single goal. Overall the hurling played on the Saturday by Cúchulainns was exceptional. With all games complete the remainder of the Saturday evening both players and mentors spent time with their hosts.
On Saturday night Clarecastle GAA had a special BBQ night organised for the occasion which was well attended by mentors and families from all three clubs.
The final day of the weekend began with all players attending mass at the local chapel. This was followed by a further two matches of 7 and 15 aside against the host club Clarecastle. As previously both games where eagerly contested with players such as Patrick Mc Aleavey, Jordan Murtagh, Conor Dougan and Laim Gilsenan showing exceptionally well in the 7 aside game. The 15 aside game also had exceptional individual displays such as Finnen Maguire, Tiarnan McArdle, Lorcan Oliver and Ryan Kearney in goal. Although both games ended in narrow defeats our lads did themselves exceptionally proud. This was confirmed as both Clarecastle & Roanmore clubs afforded the Cuchulainn a standing ovation as they departed the field of play.

The festival of hurling drew to a close with several presentations including Cuchulainn players Lorcan Oliver and Ryan Kearney receiving individual awards. Ryan received the Cúchulainns player of the tournament award for the outstanding display he gave in the art of goalkeeping. The second award received by Lorcan was a perpetual trophy introduced by Clarecastle, named after their lately deceased clubman Wax Guinnane for overall Player of the Stephen O’Keeffe Tournament. This proved to be a very popular award as Lorcan received his award from his host parent who co-incidentally was Wax’s wife Patricia.
A special thanks to Patricia who also on the Saturday insured that our club jerseys where clean and dry for the Sunday Games. With all presentations made the Cuchulainn U12 children and mentors said farewell to their hosts Clarecastle and the other travelling club Roanmore and made the return journey home. A special thanks to the mentors who travelled with the team Paddy Lavery, Ciaran Breen, Philip Cartmill, Darryl Gorman, Niall Clifford, Maggie Lavery and any body else who helped out in any small way over the weekend.
The Cuchulainn team that travelled was as follows:- Patrick McAleavey, Jordan Murtagh, Shaun Moen, Colin McKenna, Rory McGrath, Jordan Mullan, Michael Cartmill, Tiarnan McArdle, Lorcan Oliver, Finnen Maguire, Shane Cartmill, Connal Dougan, Conleth Lavery, Sean McCann, Fintan Heaney, Conall Campbell, Cormac Toner, Mathew Moore, Conor McNicholl, Liam Gilsenan, Ryan Kearney, Caolan McQuaid, Eoghan Heaney, Conor Dougan.

Young Cuchulainns Lose Out In Epic
U12 Championship Quarter Final
Cuchulainns 3-09
Derrynoose 6-02

Played last Thursday night in Milford, Cuchullainns faced Derrynoose in the U12 championship with a tie against Killevay or Camlough on the cards.

The game started very much in Cuchulainns favour as any early nerves where settled with some great attacking play resulted in 3 Finnien Maguire points, all quick in succession and all from placed balls ranging out as far as 45m. After such a fresh start in the forward line it was the turn of the defense to settle their nerves and after some sterling work from Cormac Toner and his full back line they cleared their lines with little fuss but a quick attack from Derrynoose saw them slide the ball past keeper Fintan Heaney who had just made a fine stop in his area moments before.

Cuchulainns upped the pace from the puck out and some great attacking options where set up by the half back line made up of Conor Mc Nicholl, Caolan Mc Quaid and Eoghan Heaney who where ably assisted by Matthew Moore in midfield, and these attacks clocked up another four points on the scoreboard with some great shots from Shane Cartmill and unluckily Liam Gilsenan was denied twice on goal in quick succession when breaking forward. Derrynoose once again realized a score was needed and they turned on the attack but forwards Sean Mc Cann and Shea Donnelly made it hard for the country men to get the ball down the field, but when it did it resulted in a fortuitous goal and a quick point.

Cuchulainns again from the puck out played the ball very well from defence and after some fine passing between Conall Dougan and Sean Mc Cann they were able to set up an unmarked Shane Cartmill to score Cuchulainns first goal of the game.

Half Time Cuchulainns 1-07 Derrynoose 2-01

Once the legs where refreshed and the first half play was talked over both teams took the field for the second half. Cuchulainns had made a change in the nets when Ryan Kearney came in place of Liam Gilsenan. The second half began very much in contrast to the first half, it was all Derrynoose for the opening minutes who could have taken most of their chances was it not for hard work again by Conor Mc Nicholl and corner backs Jordan Murtagh and Conleth Lavery who limited them to 1-1.

Cuchulainns began to take the upper hand again and this time forwards Sean Mc Cann and Shea Donnelly combined well to score Cuchulainns second goal of the game. The puck out whilst hit under pressure didn’t make the desired man and this resulted in another point for the home side. By this stage tired legs where beginning to show so Aaron Mc Quaid replaced Jordan Murtagh who was quick into action clearing several balls with the assistance of Caolan Mc Quaid. Derrynoose by this time had spied an opening and attacked forward with pace, a low hit shot flew past defenders only to be met by the stick of Ryan Kearney who managed to shed the ball clear of the net, unfortunately it was Derrynoose who won the ball and slotted it into the net.

Sean Clifford was introduced for the last 15 for Shea Donnelly and this allowed for the Cuchulainns to push forward in numbers from defence and their hard work was rewarded after some great passing and catching in the middle of the field the Cuchulainns notched up another 1-1. As it was, Derrynoose needed a goal if they where to get the result they needed to carry on to the next round and a long, high goal bound effort was played away safely by the young Cuchulainns keeper but the next ball was played with more pace bypassed everyone and ended up in the net.

With only minutes left to play Cuchulainns pushed forward again and again but tiredness had got the better of all the players onfield and the young city hurlers where unable to make their attacks pay off. Two minutes into injury time the final whistle sounded and the men in yellow fell the ground, exhausted, unluckily to be beaten, but with the knowledge that they had played some outstanding hurling and had fought extremely hard for every ball in the 60 minute period.

Cuchulainns lined out as follows:
Fintan Heaney, Conleth Lavery, Cormac Toner, Jordan Murtagh, Eoghan Heaney, Conor Mc Nicholl, Caolan Mc Quaid, Finnien Maguire, Matthew Moore, Tom O Kane, Sean Mc Cann, Shane Cartmill, Liam Gilsenan, Conall Dougan, Shea Donnelly, Ryan Kearney, Aaron Mc Quaid, Sean Clifford, Martin Rafferty, Ruari Duffy, Sean Dougan, Conor Dougan, Conor Hughes, Conall Campbell.

U14s Through to County Semi-Final
The U14s continued the club's success in the county championship this year with victory against Derrynoose in the Q-Finals last Monday. Despite the attrocious conditions the lads came out and gave a brilliant performance in all areas of the pitch. Goals from N Quinn, B Murphy and C Judge along with some superb points from L McGillan, P Duffy and J Freeman ensured that they will face either Croabh Rua or Killeavy in the semis.

U12s Claim County Division 2 league Hurling Title in Killeavy
In recent weeks the Cuchulainns Under Twelve Team have been extremely busy completing the under 12 league campaign by winning the Division 2 league title with an away win over killeavey. The match itself was played in a sporting manner with both teams showing some find passages of play throughout the course of the game.
In defence for cuchulainns Jordan Murtagh, Caolan Mc Quaid, & Sean Clifford work tirelessly for the team combined with the remaining defensive unit of Fintan Heaney, Cormac Toner, Conleth Lavery and Eoghan Heaney. In midfield Finnen Maguire combining with Connal Dougan provide the necessary link between defence and attack and in many occasions throughout the game made the crucial tackles required of them. In attack Shane Cart mill combining with Sean Mc Cann provided the leadership require and where assist by Shea Donnelly, Liam Gilsenan, Patrick Mc Aleavey, and Martin Rafferty who all show well throughout the game. Additional to this the introduction to the game of Jordan Maloney ,Patrick Quigley, and Jason Donnelly assist the team in securing the Under Twelve Division 2 hurling league Title.

Players that perform well on the day were Michael Cartmill, Tiaran McArdle, Sean Moen, Rory McGrath, Jordan Mullan to name a few. Minors get Championship Campaign off to Great Start
Cúchulainns kicked off their Minor Championship campaign recently with an impressive victory over a young Derrynoose side. Winning the toss and electing to play with the formidable breeze, the city lads fired out of the blocks with a goal from Neil Duffy after some good work from Anto Duffy. Points were added by C. Coulter, Niall Moen (3) and Tony Duffy(4) the later converting a free from all of 90 yards. Declan McKenna, dominating at centre half back delivered, a long ball into the square resulting in another maximum from Moen. The half ended as it started with a well taken Neil Duffy goal.
Within 5 minutes of the restart captain Coco Coulter had registered a hat-trick of superbly taken goals after his move to the full forward line. Great work from Liam McKenna and Ciaran Quinn led to points from Moen and N. Duffy and Anto Duffy finished off a great return to the small ball with a well executed goal. Derrynoose to their credit kept battling and forced full back Paddy Heaney and goalkeeper Cathal Toner into some good defensive action.
Although tougher tests lie ahead this was a good all round performance from Cúchulainns, Kyle Cody had a great game in midfield and was ably supported by the industrious PJ Nugent and C. Doyle.

Club Holds Annual Golf Classic at County Armagh Golf Course
Cuchulainn Hurling Club in association with Campbell Haulage held its annual Golf Classic at County Armagh Golf Club recently. After everyone had enjoyed their evening meal Pearse McBride undertook the role of MC and invited both the Chairman of CHC, Jimmy Kelly and the Captain of County Armagh Golf Club, Charles Vernon, to say a few words. With the course in such good condition it was not surprising that the team scores would break the 100 barrier and the following prizes were awarded; 1st Team, First Trust bank 105 Pts (back 9), 2nd Team Powerscreen One 105pts, 3rd Team Powerscreen Two 96Pts. 1st Individual S McNulty 43Pts, 2nd Individual P Quinlivan 42 Pts. 1st Society Member T Fagan 42 Pts; 2nd B Arthurs 39 Pts. U12s Come up Short Against Derrynoose
Our League campaign continued with a home game against Derrynoose in Milford. We came up just short in a great game against a good Derrynoose team, watched by a large crowd of supporters.
Every game we’ve played this year there has been a steady improvement and this showed in our striking and tackling throughout this game. We got off to a slow start as Derrynoose took command early on, but slowly but surely Finnian Maguire, Caolan McQuaide and Shane Cartmill took more control around the middle third. We narrowed the early Derrynoose lead with points from Cartmill and Maguire. Just before half time Shea Donnelly struck with an opportunist goal to bring us back into the game.
The second half was very exciting as we laid siege to the Derrynoose goal, unfortunately we came up short by five points in the end. We hope in the coming weeks that we will learn to convert more of our chances as this young team gains experience. What we didn’t lack in this game was heart as we fought tooth and nail to win, the workrate of our forwards in the second half was a pleasure to watch especially Shea Donnelly and Aaron Mc Quaide. Thanks to Derrynoose for a sporting game.

Friday 6th June

U14s Maintain 100% League Record
The lads travelled to Derrynoose last Monday to play in what would turn out to be an extremely tense match. CHC opened the scoring with 2 well worked points from B Murphy. A Corrigan put the side further ahead with a brilliant solo effort. But Derrynoose were in determined form and came back with a goal after a defensive mixup. The sides then began trading scores and with a fiercly contested midfield everyone knew this game could go either way. Further points from L McGillan and a 3 point goalmouth scramble from A Corrigan saw the sides go into the break with 2 points between them. CHC 2-05, Derrynoose 1-06
The second half started well for CHC and for the first 15 minutes they dominated the match, stretching their lead to 8 points with more scores from B Murphy, L McGillan, P Duffy and M Cartmill. This was really the point of the match where the lads should have kept the pressure on but they then allowed the Derrynoose midfield to come forward. A goal from each side (L McGillan with CHCs) kept the lead to 8 but the last 7-8 minutes were nailbiting to say the least as Derrynoose scored 2-01 without reply to bring the game back to a point. Credit to CHC though as they hung on for dear life to secure the win.
If this match is anything to go by it will make for interesting viewing when the sides clash again in the Championship later this year. Full time CHC 3-11, Derrynoose 4-07

Scorers: A Corrigan (2-0), B Murphy (0-04), L McGillan (1-05, 2 frees), P Duffy (0-01), M Cartmill (0-01)

Cúchulainns Host Successful Fergus Moen Tournament
The Club held the annual Fergus Moen Perpetual Tournament recently at the Cathedral Road Sports Complex. This was a family oriented occasion which began with an Under 8 & Under 10 blitz on one end of the pitch and a skills competition at the other for Under 12s & Under 14s. Soon after the senior tournament match was played involving minors, seniors and former players, including former county players; Gregory McKernan, Noel & Collie Murtagh, Padraig O’Connor and Paul Devlin. The game was superbly refereed by Niall Clifford, brother of county player, Ciaran. In the clubrooms afterwards, refreshments were served and the winning captain, Cathal Moen, called out his team members to accept their award. The Fergus Moen Perpetual Trophy was then presented to the player of the tournament, Paul “Rooney” McManus, by Mary Moen (pictured below). A special thanks to the Moan family for providing the awards, to Really Good Food Ltd for the food, and to Katherine Kelly and her helpers for the catering.

More Awards for Declan
Congratulations to Declan Coulter, who recently picked up yet another sports award. This time it was the player of the year award chosen by Armagh Sports Forum. Indeed Declan lived up to his title with a personal tally of 1.10 against London in the Ulster Hurling Championship the very next day after the awards.

U12s Win in Killeavy
We travelled to Killeavy for our third league match and came away with a convincing win. After last weeks defeat the team showed great heart and determination to get back to winning ways. Playing a more direct game than in previous weeks we always looked capable of taking scores. Matthew Moore and Conall Dougan were dominant players up front. Conor McNicholl playing at centre half back showed great skill with great clearances and accurate passing in a man of the match display. In midfield Finnian Maguire was a constant threat to the opposition with some fine catches and great work rate. We went on to record a second victory and we hope to improve further at home to Derrynoose in the next game. Thanks to Killeavy and their management for a very sporting game

Friday 27th May

U14s Avenge Feile Final Defeat
The U14s took on Keady just over a week since narrowingly losing out to them in the Feile final. The match was played on the small pitch at Milford and this seemed to suit the visitors as they took an early 4 point lead. However, Cúchulainns finally started motoring and started creating plenty of chances of their own which were eventually rewarded due to a L McGillan free and a M Cartmill goal. Keady then took the lead again through 2 scores before L McGillan got his second from a well taken 65. Half-time 1-02 to 0-06.
Both teams came out in the second half determined to stamp their authority on the match with a real battle ensuing in the midfield. Keady stretched their lead to 2 points before further pressure from the CHC full forward line provided an easy goal opportunity for C Gorman to put the home side in front for the first time. This time the lads were determined to keep their lead and streteched it to 2 points from another free from L McGillan. But you can never write Keady off and again they pushed for more scores. At this point though CHC had tightened up the midfield and were winning the majority of breaking ball. This ultimately won them the match as J McIlroy was able to score twice in quick sucession to keep the lads's 100% league win record intact. Congratulations to the lads for a hard fought win in particular B Coulter who was outstanding in goals yet again.  Full-time 2-05 to 0-09.

Scorers; L McGillan (0.3 all frees), J McIlroy (0.2), M Cartmill (1.0), C Gorman (1.0)

U12s Come Up Against Strong Croabh Rua Side
Our second match of the league took place away to Craobh Rua on Thursday night. This game was a complete contrast to the previous game in Lurgan as we came up against a very skilful outfit who we struggled to compete with.
Nevertheless our lads showed great heart as they kept pushing all the way against a physically stronger team. Cormac Toner and Shane Cartmill tried their best to change the flow of the game as our backs came under pressure and we eventually lost the game.
The lads know that we can recover from this defeat with good training both on the pitch and most importantly at home and we look forward to our next game away to Killeavy. We would like to thank Craobh Rua for a very sporting game and wish them well for the season.

U12s beat Sean Traceys in League
The U12 League began with a convincing away win in Lurgan. After many weeks of hard training we were glad for our first game and it was an enjoyable night for all players. The game was played in a great spirit with both teams showing great skills throughout the hour.
Cúchulainns took an early lead which they never relinquished throughout the hour and early goals from the impressive Conor Mc Nicholl and Caolan Mc Quaide showed the team the way. Fintan Heaney was solid in goals as he kept his backline on their toes repelling any Lurgan attacks on the net. Cormac Toner and Conleth Lavery provided a strong spine to the defence ably supported by Ryan Kearney and the youthful trio of Jordan Murtagh, Andrew Dynes and Marty Rafferty.
Finian Maguire helped Mc Nicholl dominate the middle of the park as they supplied good ball to the forwards. A strong half forward unit of Shane Cartmill, the hard working Matthew Cartmill and Conall Dougan contributed with some fine points. Patrick Mc Aleavy, Sean Clifford and young Shea Donnelly worked hard throughout the game to put the Lurgan defence under constant pressure. Caolan Mc Quaide produced some great touches to show his immense talent. Conall Campbell playing his first game showed how well he has come on and his constant practising of the skills was evident.
Sean Dougan, Conor Dougan, Aaron Mc Quaide and Jordan Maloney contributed significantly to a great opening to the Armagh League. Most important of all everyone played in the game and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and compliments to Lurgan and the referee who made it an enjoyable night.

U14 lose Feile by single point
Commiserations to the U14 panel who were agonisingly beaten by a single point by Keady in the Feile Final. The lads started the stronger of the 2 teams and scored 1-02 int the first half through a N Quinn goal and 2 points from L McGillan. However, 7 minutes of injury time allowed Keady to claw back the lead and equal the scores at half-time.
The lads came out in the second half detrmined to keep the pressure on and N Quinn doubled his tally with another superb goal. Again though Keady started the claw back and with a minute to go scored a crucial 65 to go ahead in the match for the first time and book their passage into the All-Ireland.
Despite the massive disappointment of losing out these lads still have lots to play for this season and are certain to bounce back all the stronger.

Ulster Feile 2008 Report
The young Armagh team headed up to Tyrone last Saturday for the Ulster Feile and came home undefeated, winning all 3 of their matches. Playing their group games in Arboe the team faced a strong Shane O’Neills side from Antrim first and found themselves 7 points down at half-time. After some stern talking by the management the lads came out flying and recorded 3-3 without reply. Great goals by L McGillan and B Coulter helped turn the game around. Final score 3-04 to 1-04 .

Next up was Eoghan Rua from Coleraine and the first half proved to be a tight affair with only 3 scores registered in total – 2 points from Eoghan Rua and a L McGillan goal just on the stroke of half time. However, the lads put in another great 2nd half performance and scored 2-5 without reply. This time goals by B Murphy and S Moen helped secure a final score of 3-05 to 0-02 .

Because their 3rd match was cancelled due to a no-show by Sean MacCumhaills from Donegal the team went straight into the final against Setanta (Donegal). The match was played in Carrickmore, the Feile host club, in front of the famous Croke Park Nally Stand. Cúchulainns started brightly with points from B Coulter, A Corrigan and C Judge but Setanta fought back with a goal and 2 points. However, a pattern was soon emerging on the day as the team came out in the second half and scored a further 1-3 without reply. A goal and 2 points from L McGillan and a point from J McIlroy meant the lads returned to Armagh victorious winning 1-06 to 1-04 .

Congratulations to the boys for a great day of hurling. This will give them a great boost ahead of this Saturdays Armagh Feile in Killeavey.

Armagh Seniors League match sees victory against Dungannon Tue. 22/04/08
The senior team earned a hard fought victory against Dungannon on Tuesday last with another excellent second half performance.
The first half was played at a good pace with both defences working hard to control their opponents. The Coulter contingent were doing most of the damage up front including a goal from D Coulter in the 10th minute but the entire defence were hurling well lead by G Barton, C Moen and R Devlin. The city side lead 1.7 to 1.5 as the interval approached but a lack of concentration let Dungannon through to score a gaol in the 30th minute. Half-time CHC 1.7 Dungannon 2.5

The gamed opened in the second half which enabled Conor Coulter to run at at will and returned 1.1 for his efforts. A masterful mid-field attack lead to another goal from C Toner, while C and D Coulter picked off scores from open play and frees along with a single effort from R McWilliams. In the dying minutes the Armagh side came under severe pressure but P Quigley made some superb saves and this along with outstanding defending from Devlin, Barton and McKernan saw the home side complete their victory. Final scoreline: CHC 3.13, Dungannon 2.13

Scorers: D Coulter 1.8 (2 frees), C Coulter 0.3 (2 frees), Conor Coulter 1.1, R McWilliams 0.1, C Toner 1.0

ULSTER LEAGUE DIV. 3 (v Newry Shamrocks) Sat. 19/04/08
This Ulster League fixture last Saturday at Pearse Og Park against Newry Shamrocks was most definitely a game of two halves. It was the visitors who came out of the blocks firing and within five minutes had scored 1.3 to a solitary point from P Donnelly. The Armagh side struggled to for most of the half even though they had plenty of possession. At least 8 wides were recorded on the opening 30 minutes. After the early set back of conceding a goal the defence gradually came into the game with excellent work from R Devlin, E Gribben, G Barton & C Clifford. Up front Cúchulainns only managed one other score from play (Chris Coulter) along with two frees from his brother D Coulter to trail 0.4 to 1.8 at half time.

Whatever was said in the dressing room at half time must have worked as the Armagh lads began with a passion that appeared to be missing before the break. With the defence now resolute and comfortably dealing with the Newry men, the forwards were now able to use the wide open spaces of Pearse Og (allegedly 2 metres longer and wider than Croke Park). The Newry men conceded frees throughout and the Coulter brothers obliged with five between them. The Armagh side bagged their first goal from D Coulter ten minutes into the half which stemmed from great half back play lead ably by G Barton. A few more scores brought the teams level but an outstanding run and shot on goal from Conor Coulter gave the Armagh lads a lead they would not relinquish. Newry Shamrocks managed to score only two points in the second half. Final score; Cúchulainns 2.14 Newry Shamrocks 1.10

Scorers; P Donnelly (0.1), C Toner (0.1), Chris Coulter (0.2), D Coulter (1.7), Conor Coulter (1.3)

U14s win 2 out of 3 in 8 days
The U14s faced three matches in eight days last week as part of their preparations for the forthcoming Feile tournaments.
First up was a trip to Carrickmore on 13th April. Despite having a small squad (2 of which were U15) the lads showed from the start their desire to play for the jersey as every ball was contested fiercely for. CHC started the brighter of the two teams and took an impressive 2 goal lead through C Toner and Connor Quinn. Carrickmore responded with a goal of their own but additional points from A Corrigan, M Cartmill, M McCullagh and a free from B Coulter should have opened up a sizable gap. However a late goal just before half time tightened things up again. Half-time 2-04 to 2-01

The second half continued just like the first with both teams trading points and then trading goals firstly by Carrickmore and then an excellent solo effort from C Judge. The last 10 minutes of the game proved crucial as Carrickmore then scored 3 goals without reply to turn the game around and lead by 5 points. B Coulter then clawed it back to with a goal in the final minute but the damage had been done. Final Score CHC 4-06 Carrickmore 6-04

Scorers; C Toner (1.1), Connor Quinn (1.0), A Corrigan (0.1), M Cartmill (0.1), M McCullagh (0.1), B Coulter (1.3), C Judge (1.0)

Next up was a trip to Dungannon. Again, only a small squad was available but the lads that turned out gave everything for the team. The lads were on excellent form up front again and took a sizable lead with a point from B Coulter and 2 goals (M Cartmill & C McKenna). The back line held firm as well with excellent defending by C Quinn, C Duffy and T McArdle. Dungannon could only muster 3 points in the first half. CHC added a further 4 points all from play with B Murphy scoring 2 of them. Half time CHC 2-05 Dungannon 0-03
Dungannon came back strongly in the 2nd half and scored 3 points without reply. A goal brought it back even further (all from the same Dungannon player) before a fortunate goal by C Gorman all but sealed it. The fair sending off of Dungannon's star player spoiled the match somewhat but it did allow more scores from CHC which included a goal from M McCullagh. Final score CHC 4-07 to 1-08

Scorers; C McKenna (1.0), A Corrigan (0.1), M Cartmill (1.0), M McCullagh (1.0), B Coulter (0.3), C Gorman (1.0), B Murphy (0.2) Own Point (Dungannon)

The following night the team travelled to Killeavey for their first league match. Killeavey could only field a team of 13 so CHC were forced to reduce their starting line-out. Thanks also to recently qualified ref Damian Kirk for refereeing as no ref actually turned up.
From the start the game was a complete one-sided affair however hats off to Killeavey for battling hard throughout. B Coulter got the best of the scoring with 3 goals and a point. Half-time 4-06 to 0-00

CHC brought all their subs on at half time and the scoring continued with the midfield of J Lynch and P Duffy controlling everything. Final Score CHC 9-12 Killeavey 0-00
Scorers; B Coulter (3.1), P Duffy (2.4), J Lynch (1.3), C Judge (1.2), A Corrigan (1.2), M Cartmill (1.0)

ULSTER LEAGUE DIV. 3 (v Sarsfields) Sat. 12/04/08
After a great victory over Ballycran the week before the Armagh side were feeling confident of putting in a solid performance against Sarsfields of Belfast. With the slight breeze at their backs the Armagh lads took some time to settle into the game and traded points for most of the first half with scores from the excellent P Donnelly (3), D Coulter (3) and P McKernan (1) to lead by a single point at half time 0.7 to 0.6. .

The second half, however, soon came alive and both teams started to play with a bit of passion. Sarsfields, however, started to edge in front and were soon in front by 4 points. However, a high ball from the mid field broke loose on the 21 yard line for D Coulter who netted with aplomb. This ignited the Armagh side and they started to pick off a few more points from the Coulter brothers. However, disaster struck when the Belfast side scored their gaol against the run of play and it took a last minute point by Coulter to draw the match with a final score line of 1.14 to 1.14.

Tuesday 8th April

ULSTER LEAGUE DIV. 3 (v Ballycran 2nds) Sat. 5/04/08
Game played on a sunny evening in B’cran but there was a strong wind-blowing straight down the field that would make the contest a game of two halves. CHC played with the breeze and got off to a great start with Chris Coulter scoring a goal from a 65. Continued pressure saw D. Coulter register a point from open play. Cuchulainns continued to dominate and fast enterprising hurling was rewarded with points from C. Toner, Conor Coulter and D. Coulter. B’cran got into the game with quick incisive breaks, clawing back 2 points of their own from frees. The strong wind made it difficult to play into it but a B’cran break on the 18th minute saw them awarded a penalty. The resulting penalty was saved by P.Quigley and cleared by the impressive R. Devlin. Cuchulainns continued to pressurise the B’cran defence securing more points from D. Coulter and we were awarded a penalty for a foul on Conor Coulter, which D. Coulter dispatched to the net with aplomb. Cuchulainns were winning all their own individual battles and this domination was rewarded with a 75yard free from Chris Coulter. The score of the half came from wing-half back P. McManus who burst onto a ball, controlled it first time and sent it back soaring over the bar for the last score of the half. Halftime score CHC 2.08 to B’cran 0.3 .

Second half saw L. Moen replace C. Toal (inj.). Cuchulainns faced the strong wind with a determination not to relinquish their lead and although B’cran now had most of the pressure, the Cuchulainn was tigerish and resolute. B’ cran were piercing the Cuchulainn goals with frees but some clever defending by R. Devlin, C. Devlin, G. Barton, S. Fields, Conor Coulter and P. McManus kept any goal opportunities to a minimum. In this half the industrious efforts of M. Gillespie, C. Toner. C. Kane, R. McWilliams, P. McKernan helped to bring the fight to B’Crans defence. This was to culminate with some incisive attacks, which heralded 2 points for D. Coulter from frees and a gem of a goal from L. Moen aided by a forty yard cross field pass from D. Coulter. As the game wore on the exchanges got tighter as both sides sought to hold onto their supremacy. A raft late frees from the B’ Cran full forward brought the difference down to 7, which was the way the game ended. Final Score: CHC 3.10 to B.cran 0.12

Monday 7th April

Senior Match Report (v Lamh Dearg)
After a tournament involving teams from Dublin and Kilkenny recently in which the boys made a good account of themselves, the Cuchulainn lads faced their first major test of the season in a challenge match against the Belfast side Lamh Dearg on the excellent surface of Pearse Og Park last Saturday. The game was played at a brisk pace under the stewardship of club and county referee Gerard Devlin. What little breeze there was favoured the home side who scored 0.10 (with 9 wides) to the visitor’s tally of 0.5 all scored by their impressive number 12. In his first year at senior level Tony Duffy (jnr) worked tirelessly in the corner and took his first score in senior hurling. The Armagh lads went asleep for the first ten minutes of the second half as the Lamh Dearg outfit clawed themselves back into the game but a few masterful pieces of play from the half back line opened up the defence for the Coulter brothers to score 2.6 between them. This combined with excellent support play from Ronan McWilliams, Conor Coulter, Cormac Toner & Martin Gillespie enabled the home side to finish out the game in third gear with a final score of CHC 2.17, Lamh Dearg 1.14.

Scorers; D Coulter 2.5, T Duffy 0.1, R McWilliams 0.2, Conor Coulter 0.2, Chris Coulter 0.4, L Moen 0.1, C Toner 0.2

Recently our Under 12 panel and management enjoyed a great day out at the All Ireland Club Finals in Croke Park on St Patricks Day. This trip was organised to reward our lads for the commitment which they had shown in their Winter training sessions in St Brigids School, the club would like to thank Mr Cullen and his staff for their continued support.

Thirty players and six coaches travelled to Dublin and enjoyed the day immensely and were proud to view there own clubman Gerard Devlin doing linesman in the Hurling Final. The lads were in awe of the skills shown by Portumna and Birr and will hopefully be aiming to be the next Joe Canning, Brian Whelehan, or our own Declan Coulter judging by the conversations on the way home.

Previously our kids had taken part in a blitz run by the St Johns Club in Belfast. We had two marvellous matches against the hosts and Tir na nOg Randalstown and our boys hurled out of their skins in both games. Against St Johns it was a steep learning curve as they were an excellent side and we struggled against the wind in the first half but on the restart we showed great courage as we played our way back into the game with excellent performances by Andrew Dynes, Sean Clifford,Conall Campbell, Shane Cartmill and Jason Donnelly. Although losing the game we learned a lot in the game.

Undeterred we then fielded against an excellent Randalstown team where Conor Hughes, Jordan Maloney, Jordan Murtagh and Aaron Mc Quaide contributed well to a great victory. Andrew Dynes, Fintan Heaney, Eoghan Heaney, Conleth Lavery and Finian Maguire were constant strengths in both games. Training continues as we look forward to more games as the season begins. All new players are welcome to Cuchulainns to enjoy our National game in a fun environment. Keep hurling lads!
